It was just before 10 pm on a Saturday and while we were assured a dry afternoon, it hadn't stopped pouring! Ray and I were relaxing commenting on the tennis rankings, prepared for the sixth telephone call that day to arrive. In due time we had a phone call from a lovely woman on a company excursion who had arrived at the BP petrol garage in St Helens and put the wrong fuel in her diesel green Subaru Legacy hire car in error. The unfortunate lady was pretty distressed apparently, stating "I simply can't believe I've ruined the car! I'm so familiar with filling my petrol car I had did not remember that I was driving a diesel!" We told her to settle back and not to worry, and that things like this sadly do happen. She was able to maneuver the vehicle into a protected position and, because it was only a short distance off from the office, we were able to get to her almost instantly. The wrong fuel was drained and she was able to get back to the hotel she was staying at. Despite the fact we got thoroughly soaked, it was all worthwhile seeing her drive off calm and less apprehensive. Yet another misfuel correction in East Sussex well done in my mind!

The 3 things you SHOULD know about petrol in diesel!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Fuel contaminated with water, regardless of whether it's unleaded petrol or diesel, is actually a significant matter to take care of in a motor vehicle - especially in modern-day common-rail engines.

Having water or AdBlue in your petrol or diesel is going to result in idling difficulties, irregular running, increased smoke and, if it's not sorted out effectively, oftentimes blown injectors. Having water in petrol is easier to drain in comparison with water in diesel - this is largely due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Even so we can handle both circumstances very expediently.

Keep in mind that any time the vehicle was started with the water contamination it will more than likely need a new fuel filter to be fitted since the old one will likely be thoroughly wet and useless.

What a good night's uninterrupted sleep! It was 7:00 on a rainy Sunday and I was off to help an older lovely lady after she had put petrol in her diesel father's Seat Leon in St Helens. She told us that she drove away from the filling station and broken down along a rural road en route to pay a visit to her godchildren. I got her location punched straight into the TomTom and was with her within 60 minutes. I arrived at the destination and drained the wrong fuel in the car vehicle. Whilst I was working she explained, "Now I'm getting relatively forgetful in my senior years and forgot about the vehicle needing diesel as I'd only just acquired it a couple of days ago after my old car, which I had used for more than twenty five years, inevitably gave up the ghost". I got the job done and she gave me a Murray mint and said thanks. What a pleasant East Sussex lady!

The customer on the phone explained: "I have just ended my evening shift and foolishly put the wrong fuel in the compact Mercedes-Benz M-Class in error". How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
